First sighting of an invasive honeybee-hunting hornet in the U.S.

Agriculture authorities are concerned after an invasive yellow-legged hornet was found in Savannah

Ga. The insects decimate honeybees and other pollinators successfully.

"This is the first time a live specimen of this species has been identified in the open United States

 the Georgia Department of Agriculture declared after verifying

the insect's existence with the USDA and the University of Georgia.

The Southeast Asian yellow-legged hornet is Vespa velutina. It's a close relative of the northern giant hornet

widely known as the Asian giant hornet or "murder hornet," for its devastating effects on bee hives.

The insects decimate honeybees and other pollinators successfully.
