Carli Lloyd: ‘I simply didn’t like what I saw’ when criticizing USWNT

Carli Lloyd says she has given a lot of consideration over the past two weeks to the reasons behind the widespread interest in her comments about the U.S.

women's national team at the World Cup.

Lloyd, who is a regular studio analyst for Fox Sports, shared her thoughts as she sat in her Sydney hotel room a few hours before reporting Spain's 2-1 semifinal triumph over Sweden.

Lloyd told The Athletic on the phone Tuesday morning from Australia, "This was not anything that was scripted.

I did this because of what I was seeing, feeling, and thinking. For 17 years,

I gave everything I had to this group. When I first joined (the USWNT),

I had no idea how hard everyone worked, but I quickly found out thanks to the pioneering efforts of the players who came before me.

I knew I had to put in extra effort every day if I wanted to keep my spot on the main team.
