Box Office: "Barbie" Opens to $155 Million, "Oppenheimer" Debuts With $80 Million

"Barbenheimer" goes beyond memes. A box office hit.

Greta Gerwig's neon-coated fantasy comedy "Barbie" debuted with $155 million, the year's largest debut.

"Oppenheimer," Christopher Nolan's R-rated historical drama, opened with $80.5 million.

Hundreds of thousands of ticket buyers refused to pick between two seemingly different auter-driven films with huge casts and twin release dates.

They attended same-day screenings of "Barbie" and "Oppenheimer," turning the box office fight into a classic double feature.

Franchise Entertainment Research president David A. Gross said, "This is an unequivocally great weekend for moviegoing." “‘Barbie’ and ‘Oppenheimer’ are complementing each other at the box office, not taking audience.”

The "Barbenheimer" mania fueled the pandemic's highest movie office weekend and the fourth-largest overall weekend in history.

The top three weekends of all time were headed by sequels to big franchises ("Avengers: Endgame," "Infinity War," and "Star Wars: The Force Awakens").
