After a chemical fire shut down Interstate 24 near East Ridge, residents were told to flee.

The Hamilton County Emergency Operations Center reported that Chattanooga fire, EMS, and law enforcement agencies are addressing a chemical fire at 482 McBrien Road near the AMC Chattanooga 18 theater along Interstate 24 on Thursday evening.

 A transport vehicle spilled and burned chemicals.

Interstate 24 is closed in both ways from the I-24/I-75 split to the North Germantown exit, and residents within a half mile of the fire must evacuate.

 The notification advised motorists to avoid this region.Chris Ramsey Community Center (Brainerd Recreation Center) at 1010 North Moore Road offers a public shelter.

 For assistance with mobility difficulties, call 423-209-5404. The announcement advises evacuees to minimize delays by taking alternative routes from the since I-24 is closed in the fire region.

Stay away until further notice. The release predicts major local traffic delays.

The announcement indicated that multiple local emergency agencies are working on this event, and further information will be shared as it becomes available.

According to the announcement, East Ridge Fire Department is leading this incident.
